Investigation
The Detective Division of the Boulder Police Department is responsible
for the investigation of crimes committed within the City. The Division is
responsible for preparing thorough cases to present to the District Attorney's
Office for prosecution.
The Division is divided up into Crimes Against Persons and Property
Crimes. There are currently 6 persons detectives, and 9 property
detectives. Detectives are on a one week on-call rotation and are
available to respond immediately to the scene of a crime at the request of
a supervisor.
Unit ObjectivesThe Detective Division's main objective is to work hand-in-hand
with the Patrol
Division to identify and apprehend criminal offenders. Through this
cooperation, both units operate efficiently to apprehend offenders and
resolve cases.
Unit's Role Within the Department and CommunityThe Detective Division
serves a liaison function between the Boulder Police Department and the
Boulder County District Attorney's Office. Patrol officers'
reports/investigations are coupled with those produced in the Detective
Division and are subsequently presented to the District Attorney's Office.
Any additional investigation required by the D.A.'s office is usually also
handled by the Detective Division.
Many detectives are also Crime Scene Investigators and are available to
assist/support on-scene investigations of major crimes.
